Pre-Care Instructions before Lip Blushing
I am the type of person who, if I get something done, wants to make sure I do my part as well to achieve the results I’m looking for. Before I introduced online booking during the fall of 2022, I used to manually book my clients and send them a long email with pre-care instructions. Many of these instructions are mentioned on my online booking system, but I will reiterate them here as well.
Here’s a list of things you can do to ensure your lips are in great condition before going in for your lip blushing procedure:
Hydrate!
And I mean really hydrate yourself. It starts from within: drink at least 2 liters of water per day leading up to your lip procedure. Make sure you don’t let an hour go by during the day without drinking at least a small glass of water. This internal hydration is even more important than any topical lip balm you might use.
In addition, use a lip balm or something like Aquaphor 3–4 times a day, especially before bed.
Use a Lip Balm with SPF
Consider making a habit of using a lip balm with SPF. This will also be recommended post-procedure, but anytime you’re in the sun, you risk developing hyperpigmentation on and around your lips.
Exfoliate Gently if Needed
If you notice dead skin on your lips 3–4 days before the treatment, you can exfoliate gently. Take a wet, warm, clean towel, apply a thick layer of Aquaphor (or lip balm) to your lips, and move the towel in circular motions in both directions. Be gentle—our goal is to create light mechanical exfoliation without causing open wounds.
Consider Taking a Natural Supplement to Prevent Cold Sores
When I had my own lip blushing procedure, I took Quantum Health Super Lysine supplements before the treatment and during the healing process. You can find it on Amazon.com or at Nature’s Garden in town. While this step is absolutely not necessary, it may be helpful for some people.
Consider an Antiviral Prescription if You Are Prone to Cold Sores
If you frequently experience cold sores around your mouth or lips, it’s worth considering a prescription for Valtrex or Acyclovir. Lip blushing can sometimes trigger an outbreak, and taking an antiviral can significantly reduce the likelihood or severity of one.
In my 10+ years of experience performing thousands of procedures, I’ve only had two clients experience a severe outbreak. Both clients were aware of their frequent cold sores but chose not to use an antiviral.
By following these simple but effective steps, you can ensure your lips are in the best possible condition for your lip blushing procedure. Proper preparation not only enhances the results but also makes the healing process smoother and more comfortable. Remember, your lips deserve the best care—before, during, and after the treatment.
